It may come to a shock to most non-Germans....but every German state (16 of them) run their refugee and asylum program....slightly different.
So it came up in the news today (via Channel One)....that if you are an asylum guy and actually get a job offer while living in the refugee 'center' (usually an old US barracks room with no shower or bath)....then they (the government of the Baden-Wurttemberg) expect you to move out on your own or pay the rent.
So what's rent add up to? 850 Euro for the barracks-style room.
Yep, almost $1,000 in US currency, for what amounts to a studio apartment with no real kitchen or bathroom.
I just started laughing when this came up. I doubt if the state really knew what the management folks were doing or the cost factor some idiot had rigged up.
The literal 'push' here? Here's the thing, Stuttgart is one of those cities with a serious problem in housing, and if you were out in the city.....looking for a studio place (say 20 square meters or less).....what you and I would call a 'tiny-apartment'....it might take a while. It's the same in Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and so on. No one says what the rate or cost is in the other fifteen states, but I doubt if it's the same rate.
How negative does this cost factor weigh upon the immigrant guy? He has to be looking at the 850 Euro gone....for a dismal barrack's type room, and question the logic of staying in Germany.
