The New German Minister of Defense?

Well, since van der Leyen resigned, this is now a major topic, which Merkel and company have around four weeks to discuss the matter and resolve it by the end of summer vacation.

The chief rumors?

1.  The Health Minister, Jens Spahn, would flip over and take the position....with his deputy rising to the Health Minister seat.

2.  The seat might be offered to Seehofer of the CSU (or he retires to hand the slot to another CSU guy).  The Minister of the Interior seat would then flip to Spahn.

3.  AKK, might step up and assume the seat (very unlikely).

4.  The Minister of Economic Affairs, Pete Altmaier, would flip to the Minister of Defense, and Spahn would move over to the Economic Affairs seat (he has the actual degree and expertise).

The only real thing that is in the works is that it has to be a CDU or CSU Party member.  I should note here that Seehofer (CSU) has already said he'll retire by 2021, and I suspect he might see some reason to retire now.....bringing in a new CSU guy for this seat.

What some people are thinking....that since AKK has fallen back a step or two on the Chancellor list....maybe Spahn could take on added weight, and be a major candidate in 2021.
