Merkel, the Shakes, and Naive Nature

If you had a German CEO at some formal stand-up event and he started to shake with his arms and legs....he'd have around seven days to present some kind of health report and expectations.....or face a loss of confidence by the board.  By the third time of the shakes?  The board would ask him to limit his appearances until he's well, or plan some retirement exit.

In the case of Chancellor Merkel?  The German news media for the most part, just plays along and grins at the camera.

The odds that she's had this shakes condition for over a year, and it's only now that it's starting to get noticed?  Well, it's been suggested but there is no proof to the idea.

The general public?  It's mostly a curiosity point....what does Merkel have as an issue?  I suspect that roughly half the public have such a minimum interest in who is Chancellor, or how the Chancellor might 'save' them....that it really doesn't matter.

It's lightly touched by German comedians.  It's generally suggested that it's in bad taste to make any jokes over this.  So you can't suggest she needs to carry a big container to re-hydrate herself before the speeches, or that it's some kind of satanic demon thing bothering her.

The idea that she could continue the shakes all the way to the fall of 2021 and then only exit the Chancellor-job?  It's not such a crazy idea, and I suspect a fair number of Germans would be all in favor of that situation.

The suggestion that she's had this condition for maybe two years and it's been slowly developing....to the level now?  Some folks have suggested this, and believe that she's very aware of what the problem is, and just intends to pretend it's nothing significant.  The odds of her collapsing at some ceremony and knocking herself out upon hitting the ground?  That's generally the most dreaded scenario that you can dream up....where she's got some concussion, and the party has to go accept the vice-Chancellor (a SPD guy) sitting in the chair for a week to a month.
