Five German News Stories

 1.  Business-related....Galeria, which is a major department store chain in Germany....will be shutting down a number of shops.

For me?  That means one of the two last 'big' department stores in Wiesbaden will be gone by June.  I probably shopped there six times a year....mostly for clothing, or to have a watch battery swapped out, or for luggage.

A sign of the times?  This was a chain which was originally developed (decades ago) for the upper-middle-class.  Part of the damage done leads back to Amazon....some of the damage is simply salary growth.....some relates to poor management decisions.

2.  Some kind of internal disagreement going on within Russia....between the Russia's military leaders and the Wagner mercenary group (spelled out via Focus).  The two heads here....aren't in agreement, and for Putin....this could spell some serious problems.  For the mercenary folks....if they don't have ammo or support, their participation in the war will rapidly come to dwindle.

3.  The 'Hart Aber Fair' live public forum show from last night (ARD, 9 PM)....was on the topic of the four-day work-week.  Basically a whole hour with this spelled out.

I'll just say....things are rapidly going this way, and I wouldn't be shocked if two-thirds of German society goes to this (even at schools) by 2030.  I won't say it's an improvement or helping anyone.

4.  WELT piece this AM worth reading....discussing court punishment dished out in general across Germany.  Growing number of the public believes the punishment level is not correct....that folks are getting a 'pass' and avoiding real jail-time.

5.  Political poll done in Hessen for the state election later in the fall.  CDU is easily ahead (32-percent), with the Greens in second place at 22-percent.  SPD in third place with 20-percent.

FDP at 5-percent and AfD at 11-percent.

This election mostly about 2nd and 3rd place?  Yeah.  The SPD have brought in a heavy-hitter to lead the chatter, but this hasn't changed the numbers much.
