Gutmensch

Some word geeks met up in Darmstadt and wrapped up a meeting today.....on top new word of the year (2015).  The top word?  Gutmensch or Gutburger.

I had to go out and look up the word because I'm unfamiliar with it.

It means.....do-gooder.  It's used in a derogatory fashion to note someone's tolerance level and active helpfulness.....as naive, short-sighted, and meaningless efforts.  "Helper syndrome" also goes with the Gutmensch usage as well.

It'd be used to note people that do volunteer work or oppose anyone negative about immigration.

I'm often amazed at the creative nature of Germans and language.  Somewhere out there....almost hour by hour in Germany.....there is this guy or gal who is making up a new word or phrase.....which has some slant on culture, society, or the media.  Gutmensch got picked up on social media....slamming the tolerance guys over a behavior that becomes more questionable as time goes by.

I thought the term for dogooder was "Merkeln".
