While we still have about eight months to go before the new Berlin Airport (BER) opens.....some info is coming out over train connections to the airport. From the heart of Berlin (downtown), it's about a 10 km drive to reach BER (almost direct south of the city).
According to the Berlin Spectator (good independent source of news for Berlin), several options will be open for public transport.
The 'FEX' train will run every 30 minutes from central railway station in Berlin....going direct to BER (figure this to be about a 20 minute ride, without any stops).
The regular S-bahn and regional Bahn service? It'll also run from downtown Berlin, but likely take in the range of 45 to 60 minutes (depending on stops).
Ticket cost? Presently, from next-door Schonefeld Airport....about a mile away....it's 3.30 Euro (one-way) to get from there to the middle of Berlin. Most people are suggesting that the rate will be the same for the S-Bahn and regional trains. the FEX option is presently unknown (I might suggest it'll be more because of the speed option).
If you were using BER (starting in October) and didn't want any confusion about getting to downtown Berlin.....use the FEX deal. Based on public comments....a lot of effort was put into the idea of you easing off the plane....getting your bags....then quietly walking to the escalator to take you down to the 'tube' area, and board a train within minutes after accepting your bag.
