More on that German Army Story

I essayed a few days ago on this negativity going on with the German military and their operational status for numerous platforms (helicopters, ships, tanks, aircraft, etc).

Well....Focus (the German news magazine) came along this morning with a curious update.

Someone came to ask about the German military procurement office....the logistics hub.

It's a curious thing....roughly 20-percent of the positions within the 'hub'....are vacant.

Yep....1,100 out of 6,500 jobs.....empty.

The station (over in Koblenz) actually did go and hire up 640 folks last year, which is a hefty number, but they actually had 514 folks who up and retired....so there was no real gain.

Projected get-well point?  Unknown.  I would take a guess that between more retirees this year and the rate of hiring....at least half of the 1,100 jobs will still be empty at the end of this year.

Generally, having worked in numerous military units....once you get to five-percent of your organization being unfilled, you start to have problems.  Reports aren't filed....audits aren't done....you forget to order Xerox-paper....people start to screw up.  If you were missing 20-percent?  There's a fair amount of requirements that you just don't do anymore.

Now in this case, you have to wonder....going back five years ago....were they having the same issues?  Since these are all civilian-type positions....are there even enough qualified folks (in the Koblenz region) who have the background for this work?  The odds that most of the recent fill-in personnel are 18-to-20 years old?

I'm shaking my head....it's a pretty stupid way that this was designed, and it's affecting the competency of the German military.
