Airline Story

Back in 1978, an airline was created in West Germany....called Special Air Transport.  It was based out of Koln, West Germany.   It had a Fokker F27 turboprop plane (one single airplane).  A couple of years later, they added a couple of 727 passenger planes (used).  Their business?  Mostly transporting tourists during the spring/summer periods out of the NW of West Germany.  Around a decade later, they got some infusion money.....added a few more planes....and renamed themselves 'Germania Airlines'.  They were working hand-in-hand with the major tourist agencies at this point.

Around 2005, the stumble for the airline started up with the owner hiring a CEO to run the company....but the owner suddenly dying.  There was some talk that the family members weren't agreeable with the new CEO, and things seemed for the next ten years to slide a bit.

I noticed in the news this morning.....Germania Airlines finally declared bankruptcy.   They had around 4-million passengers a year, and yet weren't able to sustain a profit.

You can probably find a lot of folks over the age of fifty who flew with Germania or Special Air Transport over the decades as part of their summer vacation.  A curious end.
