It's not a big front-page story, and if you asked most Germans....they haven't really noticed this. But Focus, the German news magazine brought this up today.
With all the negative hype going on in Turkey since the 'coup' in 2016.....Turks have been quietly packing up and leaving for Germany.
The core group? Well.....those with degrees and university time. The BamF group (the agency in Germany who controls applications for asylum) says that 10,655 Turks applied for asylum last year. The interesting statistic shows that almost half of those who applied....had college time. Compared against other applicants for 2017....they were at the 17-percent level.
Is this hurting Erdogan's landscape? To some degree. If this were a regular number and 10,000 highly educated Turks arrived every single year....then it would present a problem in ten to twenty years. A whole generation would have just skipped out on Turkey.
The advantage for Germany? They are getting doctors, engineers, chemists, and highly skilled applicants for residency. Long-term, I suspect that they won't be returning to Turkey and will integrate right into German society.
