'War' in Dijon, France

Well, it's curious what's happened in the past week in Dijon, France.  For those not familiar with the town....it's over in the eastern side of France...with a population of 157k residents.

It's like most French cities....it has a population of French people, and a fair number of non-French.  By French law, no one can truly say how many non-French occupy Dijon.

In the past week, this Chechen 'kid' (16) got into some trouble with a Algerian group of 'hoodlums' (at least the French locals tell the story this way).  Some suggest it was a drug gang, and maybe the Chechen kid triggered some issue in the first place.  But what happens here....is that the Chechen kid gets assaulted (beaten) to a fair degree.

The local Chechens?  Pretty peeved.

So in an area in the NE part of Dijon (figure 1 km by 1 km)....a little war has started up.  French journalists say that 150 to 200 Chechens are in the region, and heavily armed (we aren't talking just pistols here).  The Algerian drug-guys?  They invited a messy problem to multiply.

The political folks are talking about needing things to calm down.....locals are a bit worried about shooting going on, and a little 'war' starting up, and some folks are suggesting that the police allowed the drug influence to reach a crisis stag.....where it's too much for them.

Yesterday, the news folks were saying that the medical establishment in town....have protested.  They can't reach injured people, and the protection provided....isn't worth discussing.

Military folks being brought in?  There's apparently some discussion that the military is probably hours away from deployment into the town....to establish authority over this one suburb.

But here's the thing....no matter where you go in France (at least metro areas)...it's the same story.  Various non-French are into the drug-trade, and the cops are standing off.....allowing the escalation to continue.
