There's a story this morning off N-TV, and it lays out the 2020 migration efforts into Germany.
So, here's the basic facts....back in 2019, there were a total of 142,509 asylum applications applied. For 2020? It was around 40k less (102,581).
As N-TV tells the story....around 25k were Syrians, 8k were Afghans, and 7k were Iraqis.
Why the decrease? It's not entirely spelled out.
One can point at safety/security in Iraq and Syria having vastly improved over the two years (since ISIS was seriously taken down). I won't say Afghanistan is that safe, but it's probably safer than it was ten years ago.
Getting from the camps around Turkey/Greece into Germany? It's fairly difficult, and they really want you to identify yourself, and apply through the system....instead of just walking in and saying 'hey, I'm here'.
Deportations continue? That's another part of the story. If you don't show some type of ID, and you have marginal skills....the odds are against you. Just claiming economic relief....doesn't work that well.
Could Germany handle more? Before 2013....a typical normal year was around 250k applications, and the majority were accepted. There were surge years....like in the Balkans War period, but 250k was the general average.
Lessening a political plus-up? You could make the case that the AfD Party has less hype in their campaign efforts....if the number stays low like it is.
