It's an interesting twist and worth a moment of discussion.
Turkey has deemed Twitter as a 'problem'. So they've gone to a couple of laws and created something that Twitter hasn't really faced before.
First, Turkey mandated back in the summer of 2020....if you run a platform in Turkey and have more than one-million users....you have to hire a Turk to be a representative of the company....someone that they can reach out to....touch....and if necessary.....hold in some legal hearing. My guess is that it's a problem in finding someone for the job, and the amount of stress that it creates. Whoever gets the job....has to anticipate he or she will do a year or two in prison at some point in the future.
Second, Turkey mandated an advertising ban. If you publish....there can be NO advertising on the page that you pull up....while in Turkey.
Actions so far in 2021? Not a lot. Twitter still apparently pushing back. Journalists kinda hinted that something probably will occur with Twitter put in a more difficult position.
This idea of the advertising ban? It wouldn't surprise me if more nations stood up and made this a rule after you reach a certain size as a platform. Without the advertising....would Twitter exist? No. They'd have to look at the idea of a subscriber fee (per month or year) and that would put their business plan at a more risky situation.
