Micro-Car Story

For those who've never been to Germany....there's been this trend going on since the 1950s, and it centers on 'micro-cars'.

A basic description of the micro-car?  It tends to be a ultra small car (four wheels usually, but sometimes three), which has a 700cc engine (43 cubic inch).

You typically can't go faster than 25 kph (15.5 mph).  A governor-system on the vehicle ensures that.

Around 15 years ago in Germany, the federal folks decided that if you were 16 years old.....you could get approval for the micro-car.

In a lot of regions....if you were a lousy driver or collected a number of tickets....the only way ahead was the 25 kph micro-car.  In some highly rural areas of Germany....teens save up and this mode of transportation is the only way to get from village to village.

So this came up in the news today....via SWR (public TV for the SW of Germany).

German cops are observing traffic, and this one micro-car stands out.  Max speed for the car is 25 kph.

Well....this car is going double that speed (closer to 50 kph).

They pull the car over....yes, the mid-50's gal admits....she's removed the governor to the vehicle.  Why?  Mostly because of honking of other faster drivers.

The fine details of this?  If you had the faster speed situation....you'd need a license....which she did not have.

Court case now?  Apparently.

The judge might feel sorry for her and simply make the case that if she studied for the driving license....he might excuse her and she'd cure her driving issue.  Otherwise, the confiscation of the car is permanent.
