Back around three months ago....up in Hamburg....an attack occurred at a Jewish synagogue. To best sum up the situation....some German guy in German military clothing came up and attacked a German Jewish guy with a fold-up shovel (military gear, I assume).
The Jewish guy....local student....was pretty beat-up (head injury) but survived. Cops came in....found the attacker, and detained him.
What followed (you can gaze back at DW reporting) was a number of politicians and journalists condemning anti-sematic behavior. I would suggest over the week following the attack....at least twenty mentions on public TV, and various mentions of anti-sematic behavior being....well...unacceptable.
So, yesterday, the police of Hamburg wrap up the investigation. There's not much mention in public TV (even from NDR, the regional public network). But via DE24, they get to the police description of the attacker.
It was not possible to reach a conclusion about the guy's motive....primarily because he's a nutcase. Yes....mentally disturbed.
Emotional control and reasoning? Non-existent. They didn't go into details or figure how long he'd been this way (he's age 29). You kinda get the belief that he's been disturbed his entire life, and no one took the time to identify him to the authorities or to get him into a enclosed facility.
The young student attacked? Well...just lucky in this case.
The attacker now? Well...he's in a enclosed facility and one would doubt that he ever leaves that place.
The term 'being vigilant'? Well....here's the thing about it, if you take all attacks in general and started to conduct mental/drug tests, I might go and suggest that three-quarters of all attacks in Germany fall into a mentally disturbed category, or serious drug dependency situation.
I know....it takes a lot of wind out of the sails for journalists and politicians.
Just something to ponder about.
