Fee Story

This story got brought up by N-TV news today (commercial news in Germany), and I offer it as a word of warning to non-Germans visiting the country.

If you are in some public area, an airport, or train-station.....and stupidly leave your bag unattended...you could be shocked at the cost-factor.

If the cops get alerted, then the bomb-squad gets called in.  With regulations in place right now....if you stand up later and admit the bag was yours, the fee paperwork is sent to you.  Cost?  550 Euro (around $600 US dollars).

Another word of warning....if the cops stop you for some reason and do an ID check because they think you might be a threat or problem, and you don't have the passport or ID on you....there's now a fee for that as well (53.75 Euro).

The fee business?  It's somewhat new, but I would anticipate that the Interior Ministry will be adding to it in the future, and various little offenses which were fee-free.....will likely start to involve some money.
