Sunday Morning Update: Thuringian Crisis

1.  The Linke Party (far-left) is now calling for an assembly meeting there in the state of Thuringia, and demanding that the CDU Party (Merkel's right-of-center party) to cast their votes for their guy.....Ramelow.  This story is being carried by ARD (public TV, Channel One).   The odds of this?  There is actually some possibility I think, that Merkel wants the whole problem to dissolve away, and might ask that the party members holding seats there.....accept this and vote for Ramelow.

What happens in this scenario?  I would suspect that about half of these CDU folks holding seats there (total of 21) would get pretty angry, and out-right refuse the request.  Nationally, it would seriously damage relationships within the CDU and prove some elements that the CDU isn't 'right' on much of anything, and trigger voters to exit the party.

However, if you just wanted to avoid another Thuringian election (this last one was just four months ago).....this would be the way to go.

2.  The accusations of a AfD trap being set on the FDP?  N-TV carried a piece and discussed this matter.  There's no doubt that a trap was set.  But the bigger discussion item.....wasn't the trap really set by the general public vote in Thuringia back in October?  The results of that election set up a mathematical formula that cannot conclude with a majority result.

3.  Is there a top-to-bottom problem, or a bottom-to-top problem.....with the CDU Party?  MDR (public TV from Thuringia region) covered this, and suggests in some ways that local folks in the region who vote for the CDU....aren't exactly reading off the same script as Chancellor Merkel or the Berlin leadership of the CDU Party.

I suspect if you had polling done and asked direct questions.....more than fifty percent of the CDU-likely voters have a serious view of immigration and failures of the asylum program.  They probably don't agree with Chancellor Merkel very much, and if they had some other party besides the AfD folks to vote for......they might just walk away from the CDU.
