Ocktoberfest

The Munich Ocktoberfest opened today.  Chilly weather and some showers are expected all weekend, so it's that big of a weekend.  Some bits of advice:

1.  Weather typically matters.  There's only so much room in the tents, so I wouldn't recommend going on a bad weather day.

2. When they say a stein...they mean a one-liter glass.  You can figure 5.5-percent on alcohol rate.  So a 200-lb guy will be fairly drunk if he consumes two of these in two hours. You can order the half-liter stein, or the .3-liter stein as well (probably a better choice).  A Mass (the 1-liter stein) will run this year at roughly 10.60 to 10.90 each, depending on which beer you chose.

3.  They open at 10AM, and stay open until midnight.  You'd need at least 100 Euro for an entire day (figure beer, food, etc).  That's about $130 American.

4.  That hill over on the east side of the compound?  That's when the drunks fall down and spend three or four hours recovering.  There's an emergency station there with 20 medical guys on call.  Most of the ground is covered with puke by the 7th day of the event....but don't worry....you won't notice it as you lay there.

5.  The walk from the train station over to the entry-point?  It's about 13 minutes walking, 1-km.  There is a subway point right there as you exit the compound.....from 1PM on....it's extremely crowded and I wouldn't advise using it.

6.  Hotels?  Unless you had reservations six months prior....you won't find any hotels much in town.  I'd strongly recommend using the railway system and find a town 20 to 30 km away (those always have openings left).

7.  The compound has changed over the past two years.....there are entry points and cops check you out.  Don't bring any backpacks with you.  No entry cost.

8.  If you intend to drink a bit....don't carry credit cards or keys with you.

9.  Camera crews are around and taping a lot.....so you might want to think about heavy drinking and the consequences of being on a news episode.

10.  The old Army guys who went there in the 1960s probably have great stories from those days.  It's just NOT the same today.....as it was in those days.
