This story came up in my local news.....I live across the river from Mainz.
This apparently happened upon a local Mainz bus....young Mulim lady had the traditional headscarf on. She has a lawyer background.
At some point during the bus trip around Mainz....about a week ago....she was given verbal criticism by bus passengers on her headscarf. The comments came from a older lady at first......then a second comment came from an older guy...."Out here" pointing at the door (meaning 'raus').
As the young lady tells the story....other passengers heard the comment and said nothing. So after the bus-trip ended....she went to the cops and reported the incident....thus getting thus all in the news yesterday (Friday).
Cops? They believe the story. The bus-company (MVG)? They are searching for drivers who might have been on duty, and looking around at video. So far, they've yet to figure out the number of the bus or time.
I sat and read over the story. I've ridden Mainz buses a good bit over the past four years. Typically, you don't have that type of verbal commentary (of any type). Germans just don't openly chat among strangers on a bus.
Mainz is a city with a fairly large immigrant population, and it's been that way for decades. It's also a town with a large college student population.
Frankly, I just can't imagine some Germans making this type of commentary. Not that I'm calling the gal a liar.....but it's just nothing you'd come to notice from the locals there. I think after a month of looking for the driver, or searching through the video-records of buses....they won't be able to back up the story. It'll just end at that point, although the mayor and city council will spend weeks harping on good-German behavior and being kind to everyone.
