For about ten days now.....almost daily...SPD's Chancellor candidate Schulz.....has been hyping up another public TV debate with CDU's Merkel.
Merkel mostly grins when this topic comes up and says 'no'.
She agreed about three months ago to one single public debate, with a couple of conditions. That was met, and she has no intention of revisiting the arena for a public debate.
I would look upon the situation in this way....Merkel is not a four-star debate master. She's a test professor-type political figure and can lecture along her script for ninety minutes. She's careful and doesn't make mistakes. On the other hand, she doesn't do a great job on convincing, and some of her arguments are not that strong.
For Schulz....after the last debate....he actually lost a point in the next week's poll. I'm not sure if a second debate would really help him much. And he knows that she will refuse the debate.
I would also suggest that the more that the immigration/asylum and diesel questions come up....the less positive that the public see both Merkel and Schulz. In a way, the public needs the 'torment' just just end, and get this vote out of the way, and get onto the bigger question....who makes up the coalition government in the future?
