Over the weekend, SPD candidate for Chancellor Schulz said that he was OK with the idea of a public-type vote over the idea of legalization for Cannabis (marijuana). Merkel commentary? No....it won't happen while she's around....her statement was pretty clear.
If a public agenda item did come up for a national vote?
I would take a guess that from the youth vote....18-to-25 years old....it'd go 90-percent for legalizing it. With the 25-to-45 age group....it would probably be fairly divided. And with the over 60-age group....it'd be 90 percent probably against legalization.
Passing a legalization ballot might be slightly difficult, if you were to ask me.
How it'd work after legalization? You can go up to the Netherlands and observe the business-like approach there. Coffee shops operate with a license-like structure....with a tax base set upon sales. If there is illegal cannabis sales going on....you don't see it.
The effect on the German labor force? That's probably the biggest question-mark. Germans are awful proud of the products they make and the quality put into each item manufactured. If you had a quarter of the work-force coming into work with a slight high from their morning cannabis joint? Well...the quality of the products might slip. It'd create tension and friction within the work environment.
Odds of the vote coming up? Zero at this point. Schulz might be in a position where the SPD would be on the coalition deal, and he might demand such a vote to occur. Merkel, I suspect, will not sign up for such a deal.
