If you were a Jew.....living in Algeria....between July of 1940 and November 1942.....you suffered German Nazi persecution.
Thus come the words from a Claims Conference in Germany today. This group of approximately 25,000 Jews are now eligible for compensation from the German state. Compensation? Well....2,556 Euro each. Yeah, that's all. A one-time payment.
According to ARD who carried this news item today....it's believed that most live today in France..
How this persecution is figured up? Well....in this period of turmoil, Jews in this region of North Africa were under Vichy regime, which was attached to Hitler's Germany.
What was interesting to me over the article....was the number of commentaries by readers who questioned the amount, and if Germans should be compensated for various French invasions going back to 300 years ago. The moderators were quiet busy....trying to answer or defend the article, and in some cases...delete commentaries.
The fairness angle? It's a two year period, and I would guess that it's the monthly general wage level figured for the period. For the frustrated Germans who hate the continual World War II coverage....yeah, it's another reminder that the compensation angle never ends.
