Mainz Murder Story Takes a Turn

About a month ago, I essayed several pieces on the murder of a local Mainz teenage girl, by an Iraqi 20-year old guy.  If you remember the basis of the story....cops couldn't find any body and after questioning the Iraqi guy.....he suddenly got passports for the family members and himself....then exited Germany back to Iraq.  Kurdish cops picked him up and returned him.  Charges now pending.

Well....an odd piece or two fell into this story over the last day.  Focus, the German news magazine, says that there is a second crime in play.

Back in March, there was a suspected rape of an eleven year old girl in the apartment building where the Iraqi guy and his family lived.  The girl didn't come forward until a brief time later, and no one could connect the rape to this one 20-year-old Iraqi guy.....but the odd piece was that she said it was 'Ali' and the this guy's name is 'Ali'.

This led into circles.

So what cops have pieced together is that this one single young guy (14 years old, Afghan) who lives in a nearby building, and was the one who came to the cops to report where the Mainz girl was supposedly buried.....was a friend of 'Ali' (the Iraqi 20-year-old).

The two of them....are being reviewed as part of this rape accusation.  It was the one and only tip from this 14-year-old Afghan kid that solved the location issue over the Mainz teenager.

Bild, the German newspaper, spoke to several cops, and suggested that there is a third person in this little rape episode....pointing over to the 13-year-old brother of 'Ali' (the 20-year-old).  He's back in Iraq and out of the reach of the cops, unless they request he be brought to Justice.  The Iraqi government got awful upset how the Kurds handled this mess without any extradition treaty, and I have my doubts that the Germans can get their hands on the 13-year-old.

This episode has turned into a fairly complicated and complex situation.  'Ali' is said to be over 21 years old, and if true....he'll face adult charges, and likely get more than 20 years if the murder and rape are tied together. The younger guy (14-year-old Afghan) is a minor and will simply be held until age 18/19, then released.

A lot of things are left unexplained.  Why the authorities didn't react quicker on the rape?  Unknown.  The connection to Ali's brother in this rape?  Unknown.

It's a five-star story waiting to be written.
