Q-and-A: Germany: 10 Feb 2022

 1.  Sweden dumping Covid ban rules?

Well, as of Wed (yesterday), the regulation business ended.  Yes, it does bit more pressure on the coalition government.

2.  Criticism in Germany mounting over the Foreign Ministry hiring Jennifer Morgan as their government 'activist'?

Things kinda took off yesterday (Wed) as they discussed this in a negative fashion.  Lot of question centered on the idea that the Foreign Ministry is around to handle international politics....NOT climate control.

Baerbock probably isn't strong enough to handle the media questions.  Anyone's guess if Morgan is kept around, or if the Chancellor says 'enough', and dumps Baerbock.

3.  Hessen put out the numbers for the kino-theater industry for 2021....just how bad were they?

HR says.....total ticket sales for movie theaters for the state....were around 3.1-million.  Compared to 2019 (before Covid)?  Well....that year, they sold around 9-million tickets.

Most all of the theater operations will admit that they are in serious financial trouble, and they need to get the numbers back to the 2019 level (they aren't even making 50-percent of what was normal before).

Back around Christmas....I went to the city theater.  Hassle?  Well....you have to be vaxed-up, and also tested (unless you have the booster).  Out of 300-odd seats in the place....for a Friday, there were only forty seats filled.  There was zero profit, in my estimation, for the theater owner.

4.  A right to the German PCR test remains?

Well....the way the federal Health Minister said it.....if you go for a quickie-test, and it's positive.....you have a right to the PCR test then.  If you've taken one, two or even three of the quickie-tests and all show negative but you have symptoms that really suggest Covid?  You have no right.

5.  After you wrap up an official case of Covid....are you 'recovered' for precisely 90 days or 180 days?

If you live in Germany....the national rule is now 90 days.  If you live in any of the EU states....it's 180 days.

This got discussed yesterday by NTV news....with a pretty strong mystery laying there.  In the midst of this discussion....the hint was laid there....maybe this was shortened in order to get more people vax-up.  It is comical to suggest that, but since there's no true science to the Germans going from 180 down to 90.....you are just left to wonder.

How many people are walking around and claiming 'recovered' status?  Well....it's just not clear.  It might be five percent of the population.  It might only be one-percent who use this as a status instead of being vaxed-up.

6.  Did the German Minister of Health (Karl Lauterbach, SPD) utter: "In Germany it's not enough just to get on the nerves of the unvaccinated, you have to do more,"

Yeah, he did actually say that.  Basically, this 'pester-people' idea probably will unnerve people even more.

7.   Stern TV (via RTL Network) had an impressive chat-counter chat over the mandate for nursing personnel to be vaxed-up by 15 March.  It was a pretty good debate for roughly 20 minutes.  The big problem?

As the medical folks laid it out....between stress of the job and this mandate....medical people are entertaining the idea of quitting, and manpower-wise.....this is a serious consequence for society.

This 'talk' was one of the few times that the news media allowed the medical folks to talk freely, and it made for an interesting situation.

8.  Who are the "Letzte Generation" (Last Generation) and what kind of activists are they?

Well....the LG 'kids' (mostly all under the age of 20, but a few going up to age 30) started up in August of 2021 with six members.  They originally were extreme environmentalists who were happy to conduct a hunger strike to demonstrate their 'power'.  (I should note, around the 16th day.....one kid collapsed and was taken to a hospital, and on the 20th day...it officially ended with the remaining folks either taken to the hospital for physical reasons, or mental/physiological reasons).

In recent days, around Berlin....they staged blockages on main roads (using glue), and their group have expanded out into the dozens.

I'd basically describe them as the physical arm of the extreme variety, and likely to be a 'pestering-problem' for urbanized areas in the future.

9.  Massive damage in Furth, Germany from a drunk truck driver?

The basic story goes this way.....the guy took a tractor trailer unit and plowed into 34 cars....setting a nearby house on fire.  Local fire chief made a blunt statement....he'd never seen this much damage on one single night.

10.  Omicron Berliner?

Locally (here in my town of Wiesbaden)....a local bakery has created some bigger-than-average Berliner pastry....loaded with sugar content.  Just looking at it....I'd guess the calorie take to be a minimum of 500 calories.

11.  Did Hamburg's CDU 'boss' Christoph Ploß suggest that the Health Minister (Lauterbach, SPD) has become the Minister of 'Fear'?

Well....yeah, in an interview with BILD....Ploß did utter the catch phrase.  If you asked me...probably 10-percent of Germans now react when Lauterbach comes on TV by hitting the mute-button....either out of fear of what he'll say or just admitting they've had enough on health lectures.

12. Finally....this rumor of halting the precise count of Covid and simply going to a 'sampling'.  Any truth to this?

What this gets down to....because of the massive numbers via testing and the PCR tests falling back (the labs simply can't perform at this level)....there will be an estimation in the future (call it a best guess or just a estimate).

Right now, NRW (North Rhine Westphalia) is the state talking of this method.
