On Wednesday night, HR (our regional public TV network for Hessen).....ran a hour-long live show which talked about Ukrainian war, refugees, and fear of the war arriving on our doorsteps here.
Yes, folks called up and asked pointed questions about bomb shelters, how alerts would be conducted (meaning in Germany), and civil protection.
I would say....particularly with the over-80 age group.....they are highly concerned because they remember mid-1940s. But with the amount of news coverage.....probably around a quarter of the population of Germany has some fear of what might occur.
So....some things you tend to notice:
1. Back in 2007, it was determined that peace was at hand, and there should be no more money/effort made to have bomb shelters.....so they slowly all went away. Most were sold, and a few became band-practice locations.
2. Germans are going into pharmacy operations and asking about iodine pills....out of fear for nuclear events.
3. There is a 70-page booklet to explain civil operations and how you can be 'helped'.
I suspect HR did the piece to reassure people, but by the end.....it would appear they are more unprepared for war than in the 1940s.
