Hotel Story

On the far eastside of Berlin....lies the neighborhood of Lichtenberg.  It's a part of old East Berlin....which attracts people for culture, food, and landscape.

Getting property approval for use....like buying a property to enhance for a museum or culture site....is awful damn easy.  If you were to say it's for a hotel, the permission would not be that easy to get.

So I bring up this RBB (public TV for the city) story.

In simple terms, these folks came with this property, and asked permission to build something called 'Coral World'.  In the description, it's a nice water-type aquarium that had 'educational center' in the text.

All seemed great and approval was given.  Somewhere in the text, it went on to say hotel-like facilities.

Some folks (of a liberal persuasion) are saying this is screwed up and done in a deceitful way.

The hotel itself, on paper?  It'd be 169 rooms.  It's not huge, but it's not the typical average hotel-only complex.

This having been a city-owned property and sold for the purpose of the museum?  Well....that's part of the story as well.  This now attracting negative attention?  Some folks think the city needs to react, and somehow cancel this (meaning a court battle to take several years).

The fact that the aquarium will be built?  As long as they do that part of the deal....cancelling or hindering this will be hard (my humble thoughts).

Would I make a trip to Berlin and stay at a hotel that seems to be selling itself more as an aquarium than a hotel?  I can imagine some bar area, with 20,000 liters of water, and fish swimming around....making it an entertaining lounge.
