Soccer Game Story

I sat and watched a bit of the European soccer championship series last night, and there is this odd thing that occurred.....which has generated a fair amount of commentary in Germany.

So it goes this way.  Probably two or three minutes before half-time in the Denmark-Finland game (Finland won by the way)....the star Danish player Eriksen fell to the ground.

To me, it appeared like a heart-attack situation....probably more will come out today.  The key thing....he is alive and in the hospital.  CPR did apparently occur, so it was pretty serious.

The game was being covered by Channel Two (ZDF, public TV).  About five minutes into this severe life emergency....coverage from the stadium completely halted.  Other than a info page talking about the player, and the health emergency.....nothing much else.

This jolted most viewers and even journalists who were watching the event unfold.

A scripted response?  That's the funny thing about this.....it seems to be some type of code or written rule....you can't cover a live event like this until the game resumes.  In this case....about an hour after this started....the field was cleared up, game resumed....half-time took place, and the 2nd half played out.

Today?  I expect the game to be marginally discussed, and the health emergency/current condition to be the main topic.

Was there anything much to be gained by keeping the on-screen business going?  Personally, I doubt it.  If it'd been American journalists....they'd just go on and on with speculation....making this into a farce in the end.
