About 30 minutes driving away from my house is this German town of Limburg. It's mostly noted for being a significant amount of Catholic influence, Catholic corruption (note the 30-odd million Euro episode from five years ago), and being scenic.
On Monday....all 'hell' broke loose in the middle of town. What we can say for a fact is this. A German-driven truck was in the middle of town, when some idiot walked up....opened the door, and yanked the driver out. Then this nutcase, a 32-year old Syrian who'd been in Germany for about four to five years...jumped in.
Over the next minute or two....he ran the truck into several vehicles which were stopped in front of him, at a stop-light. In the process, there's around nine others (can't say if they were all Germans but you could suspect that) injured. None seriously. All of them were protected by their vehicles. Whiplash, and probably a pretty big scare is what they ended up with.....along with a fairly damaged car.
Cops then arrive, and yank the Syrian out....detaining him.
So now? The Frankfurt Attorney General (state prosecutor) will take over and handle this. Speculation that he's a terrorist? Cops only say it's possible. Germans in general? They don't speculate much....in their heart, they believe he was a terrorist.
Me? I'll wait till the cops review his social media and emails. Yeah, it's probably a 98-percent chance that his religion got out of control and influenced him to be a nutcase.
What'll happen now? Mental eval likely to be ordered by a court judge, and some six-month period of reviewing his mental side. If he had communications with jihadists, then it'll come out about his social media stuff or emails.
Here's the thing though.....you have one single incident like this (no deaths) and suddenly in Limburg, you'd have a three-quarters of the population asking stupid questions about safety and security. Everyone would be suspicious. You'd have to go and add more security to every single public event. The mayor would demand more cops, and people would be extremely focused on all crime.
Update: Late afternoon Tuesday. Well, some items added by the news media and cops. First, this guy is a failed asylum seeker from Syria (failing last week), and he was on a list to be deported. Chief reasons for the failure? They don't say that part, but cops say that the guy is fairly well known to them (assault, drug sales, and shoplifting). The state head of security for Hessen says a review of his connections say the guy has no radical Islam connection. So what was this about? I would go and suggest heavy drug and alcohol use, and he was not really thinking much about his actions. Jail-time? I'm leaning more toward that than mental eval now.
Added footnote: Wednesday morning. Cops have added two additional comments on the guy. The guy is considered not only by the cops but by friends....to be extremely aggressive (to the extent that he couldn't deal with work at a Kebab Shop). One relative brought up the extent of mixing drugs and alcohol, and that this guy was simply not right in the head. Second, the charges being discussed? Dangerous bodily harm, dangerous interference with traffic, and attempted murder. Getting him to voluntarily return to Syria now? Almost impossible because the Syrians probably don't want him back. So I might go and suggest that the charges will amount to a minimum of fifteen years in prison, and German tax-payers will be paying for this guy for the rest of his life.
