Since that Halle attack (2 dead and 2 wounded), the political folks have been hyping MORE security.
The problem with the general public is that they are looking at local shopping districts, fest operations, and holiday 'cheer'.....with all these extra cops around, and the public is asking more questions....why do you need the extra security?
As much as the politicians think they are doing something to please the public in German urban areas.....the outlook circles around how you got into this mess in the first place.
Every single fest in Wiesbaden over the past two years has involved way more police than what you would have noticed 25 years ago. My wife (the German) gazes at this, and just shakes her head. You didn't have a need in the 1990s for German cops carrying machine-guns, or to be in bulk-display. Me? I can remember the late 70s and early 80s, when the Red Army folks were around, and there was way more security than normal, with things relaxing around 1990 to 2000.
The problem here is that Germans themselves....just aren't that stupid. They observe things, and ask questions. The responses just aren't working like they were a decade. Most of them are going to ask....in terms of them fearing for their life, who should I fear more....Islamic terrorists, leftist radical revolutionaries, or right-wing pretender-Nazi thugs? I think 98-percent will rate the right-wing guys as a much lesser threat, and the radical Islamic guys and revolutionary types as a bigger threat.
For the politicians, this will lead into some discussion group with regular people pointing at past incidents. It just won't go well for 'more' security hype.
