As Germany's Minister of the Interior wrapped up his tour in Greece this week, he laid out the plan ahead to help 'resettle' the refugees there on the islands. The numbers? In the range of 60k to 80k.
The plan? Germany would agree to take one-quarter of the group, with other EU countries 'chipping' in to take the remainder.
An agreeable plan within the Merkel coalition? Well.....no. Elements of both the CDU and CSU said no. The SPD has been quiet, and I suspect that most would agree to the one-quarter number.
How they came to the one-quarter number? Just out of thin air.....there is no real basis for it.
The suggestion that maybe all of the refugees in Greece want Germany as their final destination? It's best not to bring up that suggestion.
The chief opposition against this? Well, if you dig through commentary and various analytical thoughts....it's not a one-time situation. In a year or two, you could have another 100,000 be part of some resettlement situation, and you'd repeat the act. Then the same issue is existing in Italy. All of this....whether planned or not.....leads back to more migrants making the trip and taking their chances.
