I walked around this week, and stood by the news stand in Mainz.....observing the middle paper...headlining 'RENTNER HEINZ LAG 8 JAHRE TOT IN SEINER WOHNUNG!'
So the basic translation? Heinz the retiree, was dead for 8 years before being found in his apartment.
It's a simple eight line story, and one that you see repeated about every six months in Germany.
This guy was divorced, and a baker by trade. He had a dog. Through the baker-trade, he developed an allergy and got the doctors to sign off in his mid-50s onto a early pension deal. The pension flowed into his account monthly, and he had everything (the rent, the electrical, the phone bill, etc) all rigged to take money out automatically.
No one noticed the guy not around one day. No one noticed him not walking the dog. A week ago, a fire erupted in the basement of the apartment building, and they were trying to evacuate folks. No one answered the door....they forced it open, and here lays Heinz dead, with dog nearby. Eight years dead from what they can figure. The dog died a few days later.....starvation.
No one missed the guy. About every six months, you find an German episode like this. Always someone who had their bank account automated, and no relatives close to the person.
