130 kph Speed Limit?

In approximately two weeks, a draft measure will come up within the German Bundestag....over making the national speed in Germany on autobahns....130 kph.  The unlimited speed thing would go away.

The measure supported and drafted by....the Green Party.

Yes, it has C02 angles to it and probably has some support in the public.  Odds of passing?  The CDU/CSU folks have said every single member will vote it down.  The SPD has issued orders to it's people to vote it down, but I have my doubts on that happening.  Both the AfD and FDP have said they'd vote it down.  So you are left with the Linke Party who has said they'd generally support the idea.

Here's the thing.....there is this confrontation brewing, and by 2030, you might see the 'collapse' start to occur....even earlier if this 130 kph speed thing is passed.

The confrontation?  For years, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, and Audi built big and powerful cars.  The car industry has customers who eagerly return, and continue the trend.  If the limit of 130 kph is established....the powerful cars disappear.  Even without the limit, by 2030....the only new cars you can sell in Germany are the battery-type, and unless battery technology really improves, it's a problem with high-speed cars.

So do most Germans drive faster than 130 kph on the autobahns?  Around urbanized areas....no.  If you get 20 km SW of Frankfurt, going to Kaiserslautern, for example....I would suggest that forty-percent are doing a minimum of 130 kph, and some up to 200 kph.

Right now, the statistical folks say that almost 60-percent of the autobahns have a unlimited speed situation.  Around most all urbanized areas, it's a limit of 100 kph.

The safety 'slant' to this?  Most safety experts all agree....130 kph would be the better objective and make the autobahns safer.  But we aren't talking about decreasing by vast numbers.  If you sit and look at how accidents occur on autobahns.....a lot of this is related to trucker actions (who already drive at the max of 100 kph), snow and ice conditions, and drunk drivers.  Those accidents would continue along at the same rate, with no effect.

My humble belief is that the 130 kph speed will eventually occur, before we reach the 2030 point.
