One of the most closely guarded secrets in Germany, for decades, was the salary structure of the 'bosses' for public TV. It's roughly 200 Euro a year that you 'contribute' into the pot for your household.
The board of governors for public TV put pressure upon them....that they had to start at the very top and admit this as public information. Focus actually wrote up a fine short article over the salary deal.
If you look at the structure....ARD (as Channel One) is the top dog of the public TV sector, with their 'boss' (Buhrow)....making 395k Euro a year.
Channel Two (ZDF) 'boss'? Thomas Bellut, who makes 369k Euro.
Oddly enough, the regional network 'boss' for Bavaria (BR) makes 388k Euro a year.
So you might ask this question....it seems like a lot of money. If you were to go over to RTL (commercial TV), you'd likely find a similar amount of pay, and I would take a guess that the BBC pays near the same as well.
Begging more questions? Some Germans probably would ask how they rate for such pay, or how the rest of the organizations consumes consume a billion-plus Euro a year. For right now, the board is happy to let one of the little secrets out.
