State by state in Germany, there's actions being taken to take the fine business to a new level. I noticed a brief article today in ARD public TV news that chatted over the escalating problem.
Right now, walking down the street or in some public area, you can still avoid wearing the mask (in all 16 German states).
If you enter any store or contained area? All 16 states mandate the mask to be worn.
If you ride a bus or train? The mask is mandated, with police called upon to remove you if necessary.
So to fine chatter....Lower Saxony will improve their mask fine from 20 Euro (roughly 25 dollars), to 150 Euro (200 dollars).
Baden-Wurttemberg has a fine range from 25 Euro to 200 Euro, depending on situation and how you react upon the warning.
Berlin-City? It ranges from 50 Euro to 500 Euro.
Here in Hessen, the warning is first given with a citation....and on the second event, it goes to 50 Euro.
In the Saarland and Saxony-Anhalt, there's still no fine on the books....just chatter of possibly one coming. In their cases, they hope that peer pressure and reminders will be enough.
So my advice, if you were a non-German traveling around the country, you might want to know what state you are in, and the general rules within that state.
