19 Mar 2025: Eight German News Stories

1  Baerbock, current Green Party member, and Foreign Minister....is a candidate for the presidency of the UN General Assembly in the 2025/26 session.

2.  N-TV did a new political poll.....CDU-CSU at 27-percent, and AfD at 23-percent (up 2).

3.  German Bundestag has voted in favor of the billion-euro infrastructure and defense packages. Bundesrat (the upper house) will vote on Friday.....should  pass.

4.   Frankfurt Airport's passenger traffic rose by 3.7 percent to 61.6 million in  2024.  That still doesn't beat the 2019 year number....before Covid...at  70 million air travelers.

5.  Siemens to cut 6,000 jobs by the end of 2025.

6.  Supposed to be a 3-percent-plus pension increase this summer.  Last time an increase came?  Well....17 years ago.  Lot of folks grumbling.

7.  WELT piece from Tuesday....Germany....a land of illiteracy and innumeracy?  What the facts say....around 33-percent of students fail the basic skills of reading, writing, and math.

8.  Merz (incoming Chancellor) did a speech yesterday....says he wants a 'audit'....drilling down into social spending, and suggesting that cuts can be made. Yeah, it sounds a  bit like the US's DOGE audit. But I don't see this finding a trillion Euro of poor spending habits.
