Q-and-A: Germany: 20 Feb 2022

 1.  Polls showing the CDU Party moving ahead?

I noticed off Focus this morning another poll.....reflecting if a election occurred today....27-percent of Germans would vote CDU/CSU.  For the SPD?  22-percent. The Greens at 15 percent, and the FDP at 11 percent.

A big deal?  You've got around 3.5 years before another federal election occurs (unless a collapse occurs with the coalition).  I wouldn't worry much.

A big deal for state elections?  Well....yeah, I would start to worry if I were running a state election in 2022/2023 election for the SPD.

2.  Was there a energy provider who hiked massive charges on new customers recently in Germany?

The short answer to this.....yes, it was a reactionary hike in charges after a couple of smaller energy providers 'failed', and customers were left 'adrift'.  The particular new energy provider set the incoming level at 245-percent of what was normal.  Court interference?  Yeah....a German court stepped in and said 'no way'.

3.  Inflation about to 'bump' up in Germany?

Some analysts are suggesting that the Ukraine 'war' (if it starts) will be a sudden situation where several surges will occur over a one month period.  Fact?  There's little to go on, if you wanted absolute evidence of this suggestion.  Based on what has been said on prioritization....housing heat (via natural gas) will go on and not be a problem.  Industrial heat/use of natural gas.....totally different story, and they are number two on  the prioritization list.  That might suggest a problem.

4.  Donbas talked about as the Ukraine district likely to be taken over by the Russians?

If you review German news this morning....several have talked over strategy and think this district (far SE) being the only target.  Size?  If I were comparing Donbas against the state of Alabama....it'd be about one-third the size of the state.

5.  Germans buying a lot of gasoline in Poland?

Well....here's the situation....gas cost around 60 Euro cents CHEAPER in Poland.  So if you lived within a 45 minute drive of the border.....you might as a Germany....drive over with five to ten ten-liter fuel tanks in your trunk, and fuel up....saving about 78 Euro.

The effect on gas stations on the German border of Poland?  It's driving them out of business.

German tax on fuel?  There is a 65-Euro cent tax on each liter, and then there is a 19-percent VAT situation.

6.  A get-tough approach to the environmental kids blocking traffic?

Well, there is this suggestion making the rounds....each time a environmental blockage occurs, and cops get the call....the man-hours are added up and the cost of the police action would be handed to the kid to pay off.  All of this chatter at this point....but I would suggest in about a month, with the trend continuing....a get-touch situation will occur, and the kids might be shocked at a bill of 8,000 Euro for a simple two hour blockage of traffic (that's a lot of candy money).

7.  Nuclear weapons chatter via public TV in Germany?

Well....I was a bit shocked at the extent that ZDF covered the topic, and some Germans are probably sitting there....thinking how did the Ukraine crisis drift over to Belarus, Russia and nuke-missiles?

The Russians did a demo of a particular series of missiles which could be deployed for nuke weapon use.

As much as Covid has been topic number one for two years....things are changing.
