Couple of years ago...Wiesbaden was the first German city to declare a 'weapons-zone'. It meant that a certain section of town (the shopping district and region going to the train station)...was a patrolled area by the police, and after 9 PM....they could stop you....ask for an ID, and frisk you. Anything perceived as a weapon? Charges came into effect, and double the normal fine.
I noticed this AM....Frankfurt has finally said 'enough', and made the section of town around the train station (the Hauptbahnhof) such a zone. Basically a 4 block by 3 block area of town.
A dangerous part of Frankfurt? If I compare it against Frankfurt of the late 1970s, Frankfurt of the mid-1980s, and Frankfurt of today? Yeah, it's become a magnet for addicts, and you probably shouldn't walk through this district after dark. I'd even go and say at 9 AM to 5 PM....if you have to walk through it....walk at a fast pace and don't linger for any reason.
What'll happen now as a no-weapon zone? I suspect more people being stopped after 9 PM, forced to show an ID, frisked for weapons....only to find drugs in their possession....thus being detained on that charge.
