German language has this one little extra letter.....the ß."
Normally, it'd be pronounced as eszett.
The usage? Well....it's a double-S situation. Essen would be a good example of this. If you saw someone write it.....it'd always be in a small format.
This came up this week because the PhD language folks had this meeting, and decided that the eszett could be capitalized. Up until this point....have a word where the double-S situation arrived and was a noun or the start of sentence....just didn't come up.
A big deal? No. But you have to think about this.....German has been around for several thousand years, and it wasn't until 2017, that the eszett letter was deemed capable of being capitalized.
