Back in the 1980s, if you hung around Wiesbaden.....at least as a US GI.....you would consider the city to be among the more safe places in the world. Crime was almost non-existent. Robbery was rare. Assault just never happened.
This morning, I went through the local police blotter report for Wiesbaden last night.
Down on the walkplatz of the city, near the Burger King operation....two guys walked out onto the platz around midnight last night, and encountered a group of a dozen 'punks' who laid into them.....'hit in the face' is the police comment. The 'punks' ran off, being described as 'southern in appearance' (typically meaning they were of a non-German origin).
One of the two required more medical help and ended up at a local hospital.
Over the past year, I can probably point out a dozen episodes like this....all at night, and always escaping away into the night. It typically happens after midnight.
It's another one of those hundred-odd things that changed over the past forty years and makes you ponder over the behavior of the general public.
