Diesel Story Continues

I was 'slightly' amused by this story, which came out this morning via Focus (the German news magazine).

This young German gentleman went out and did a master's degree thesis (for the University of Duisburg-Essen).  His topic?  Well.....the nitrogen oxide pollution for cities along the Rhine River.  Somewhere amongst all this hype of the 'evil' diesel chatter of the past two years, and the cities trying to ban diesel cars.....it's kinda obvious that almost all of the cities have this one unique factor....they lie either on bays, or rivers.

The thesis in this case?  He went through the various scenarios for river boat traffic...which ALL of the boats on the Rhine....are diesel-powered.

The guy chats on the future, IF there no more diesel vehicles in 2030 (the projected point where diesel and gas cars would go away).  Logically, that would be the end to the whole Nitrogen oxide issue....right?  Well.....no.

As Focus points out.....the thesis asks the perfect question....how will you convert the diesel ships?

I expect the same question to come out for farmers, and the various vehicles they operate....which are also diesel powered.

In the case of this thesis....he's opened up a can of worms for the political folks to consider.
