Crime 2017 in Germany

I often talk about crime in Germany, and lay out various issues.  I noticed via ARD (Channel One, German public TV) this morning another crime report.

2017 numbers came out over burglaries in Germany....another decline noted (2 years in a row).  German cops noted 116,540 attempted or completed burglaries for the year.

It's roughly a one-quarter drop over 2016.  If you go and look at 2015 numbers.....167,136 apartments or houses were broken into.

So what happened?  A couple of things.  The political folks upped the fine for breaking into a house.  It used to be six months.....now, it's ten years.  The career folks caught over the last year or two?  They are resting in some prison for a while.

Cops will tell you that they got smarter.  Software will show clusters and time-events....giving the cops an idea of neighborhoods under threat and an idea how gangs work.

Private citizens went out and modified their houses....stronger doors/windows.  Special locks installed.  Cameras put up.  Sensors installed.  Germans are likely to pick up the phone and call the cops if they suspect something is going on at the neighbor's house.

But as part of the report.....the cops admit there is a trend of more sophistication.....and traveling groups of individuals from Southeastern and Eastern Europe.  They have structure....communications....and planning processes.   So to say the number decreased....I suspect it's only a temporary trend.
