RMCC Story

After months and months of work, and around 195-million Euro spent....the folks in Wiesbaden finally wrapped up the construction of the new expo-hall structure in town....the Rhine Main Congress Center.

Locals will say it is the crown jewel for guests in town.  You can stage concerts, political party meetings, musical events, etc. 'State of the art' is the hype of the city on the structure.

This weekend was supposed to be the grand opening deal....having started on Friday.  Doors are open and folks are getting a tour of the expo hall.

Well....at some point yesterday, around 10:30 AM, as they were getting ready for another walk-through show....someone forgot to turn off the fire alarm to the building when some 'fake smoke' show was supposed to start.  And yes, it triggered a fire alarm, with the sprinklers turned on full-blast for about one-third of the big hallway.  So out poured roughly 4,000 liters of water per minute, with the fire alarm going full-blast over the whole building.

Now, most folks would panic and run for exits.  But not Germans.

In this case, no one really got panicky or disturbed.....with most just standing there and admiring the sprinkler in full-effect in the front part of the big room.  Even I (if I were there) probably would have stood there and admired the water pouring out of the sprinklers.  The management folks had to 'invite' folks to leave the building.....to get the fire department in and stop the mess.  Yes, 'invite' is the word that they used to force people to exit.

Damage done?  Well...no one says much but they figure there's going to be some stuff that has to be replaced.   You can figure the building will shut-down for at least a week or two, while they sort this out.
