The coalition partner of Merkel's team is the SPD Party. Since the 2nd of June 2019....they've had a temp group (3 folks) who are the party leadership. Andrea Nahles resigned and the party has been in some spiral of sorts....with a 'hunt' going on to find the right 'duo' (it has to be a male and female 'team').
So four months with the temp crew, and no selection yet? Yep. Even SPD enthusiasts are laughing over the long delay. It's almost like having a golf tournament, but most everyone is hanging around the clubhouse, sipping beer, and just chatting....instead of wrapping up the tournament itself.
Today, one of the major German comedians and satirists stood....Jan Bohmermann, and said he'd now throw his name into the hat.
Going nowhere? He needs three local associations from his state region to recognize him, and his name would actually go forward. It's anyone's guess on what will happen.
So how does the SPD feel? They think he intends to ridicule them, for delaying this so long. Yet, they won't deny him his chance.
All of this delay and public discontent with the SPD Party....hurting them in the end? Look....they are in the 14-to-16 percent range, and way down from where they were 30 to 40 years ago. The Green Party has taken a good ten points away in the past year, and the SPD doesn't have many ways they can make a 'comeback'. It makes perfect sense for the comedian to enter this game. It'd be a shocker if he actually won, and had to represent the national party.
