Germany and the Coronavirus: 4 April 2020

1.  Deaths:  1,152 (Focus numbers)   Infected:   85,432 (Focus numbers).

2.  Soccer.  The story started up several days ago, and a number of German journalists have commented on what they know.  What is said now as a 'general-fact' is that from the high league (The Bundesliga), there are 18 total clubs, and in the second level....there are an additional 18 clubs (36 total)......and a number are reaching a point of bankruptcy.

Numbers?  Right now, the talk is 13 total clubs heading this direction and will declare bankruptcy at some point in May.  Six clubs in the top league.....seven clubs in the second league. Fault?  Virus issues, no fans allowed into stadiums, etc.

What would happen?  By German law, there would be a hearing, with a judge appointing a lawyer to be the controller or administrator of the 'business' (in this case, each club).  The government would step in and provide basic funding to run the business.  As far as I know.....it's not something that has happened in the soccer league, and no one can say if government money would pour in to fund certain quality players.

In plain words, it's not the end of the world (if you were a soccer fan) but it really shows the fragile nature of the soccer clubs, and I would suggest for the upcoming new season (in the fall).....it'll be a rough period if the virus is still around.

3.  Virus experts in Italy suggest that the peak of the 'curve' has been reached, and numbers are now lessening.

4.  The EU wants to offer more logistical support.  However, if you think about it....the 27 remaining nations of the EU would have to 'hand' the EU the money (instead of using it themselves) and then allow the EU to 'hand' it back to certain government agencies for dedicated purposes.  Even a fifth-grade kid would tell you what this resembles.

5.  Some discussion going on to suggest that Germany had a 'superior' healthcare system, when compared to Italy or Spain, and this is the reason for the lesser death-rate.  This is coming from virologists though.....not regular doctors.

6.  Chancellor Merkel has now returned to 'duty' after two weeks of self-quarantine.

7.  A massive study of 3,000 households in Germany will be undertakened this weekend in Germany....to determine if the virus is present in the house.  I assume that these are homes/apartments with occupants who have recovered from the virus.  If this is a typical German house.....a thorough cleaning will occur with disinfectant before 'guests' arrive.  So a lot of good this survey will achieve.

8.  Massive warm spell arriving in Germany tomorrow (Sunday), with temperatures up around 18 to 20.  A lot of Germans will be outside.  The authorities will not be happy.

9.  Two states in Germany have set up rules about 'who' can enter or rest there.  If you had an RV parked in those areas, and intended to go up and rest for a week or two.....there are restrictions to prevent you from that.

10.  Social distance fines?  In Berlin (the city), the fine is now set between 50 and 500 Euro....if you fail to accomplish a distance of 1.5 meters.  There's another Berlin fine if the police are alerted that you are in an apartment that is for someone else, and you happen to be 'staying' there (up to 500 Euro).

11. I noticed a German commenting that this crisis period has created a 'asshole-test', where you observe people in quarantine conditions for a lengthy period of time, and how their character stands up, or collapses.  They may have a point on that.
