14 Jan 2023: Five German News Stories

 1.  Rumor via BILD and SZ....the German Defense Minister (Lambrecht, SPD) wants to resign.  Problem?  The SPD would have to find someone to take the job, and I doubt if any of the top 100 members of the Party....has interest in this.

BS-factor?  She's been at the job for a year, and has 'stumbled' around on twenty-odd occasions.  I give the story a marginal '2' on a one-to-ten BS scale.

N-TV, I should note here....says the papers will be filed on Monday with her resignation.

2.  Jungle Camp Show opened last night on RTL  Lot of odd things (I watched the whole two-hour beginning).  Craziest part was some super-duper positive energy female guru being a part of the group.

3.  Lot of chatter started up yesterday over Germany's healthcare crisis.  It's estimated now that one out of every three clinics or hospitals in Germany....will have to declare bankruptcy unless the fed system steps in to save them.  This will likely turn into a page one crisis once it starts.

4.  Open discussion now going on about the Finance Minister Lindner's 'IRA-like' concept....he wants to invest a serious amount of money....over 100-billion Euro....into the investment market, which would be some concept to 'save' the German pension program.

Every year....around 10-billion would get thrown in.

Would have to be agreed upon by SPD/Greens.  Most of them are shaking their heads....not in simple agreement over this.

Based on what I've read....it's long-term designed and wouldn't really help with matters until you get into the mid-2030 era.  It's also heavily designed to flush capital into the German stock market, and expecting positive numbers in the years to come (something that I probably would question).

As shaky as the US Social Security system is....the German program is just as shaky.

5. This recent chatter of a major overhaul of the gun law in Germany...pushed by the Interior Minister (Faeser, SPD)?  Well....the FDP has stood up and said nothing on this moves until a complete review of past history (failures) are laid out.

From the read of changes....semi-automatic weapons would have been forbidden (we aren't talking about just rifles, but pistols as well).  This legislation also would have required you to have a gun license....for a starter-pistol, and for cross-bow weapons.

Some people are in opposition....saying present laws aren't being used enough to prevent episodes, and new laws aren't necessary.

On the cross-bow business....to be honest, I doubt if anyone has a firm or realistic number of them in the country, or who holds them.  I'm also of the mind that if this were drafted up....the very next idea will be a gun license for people who own machetes or swords.

Odds of passage now?  Less than a 50-percent chance, my humble view.
