Just over 30 years ago....DDR (old East Germany) ended. Among the things left to clean up....has been the Stassi files (the Secret Police business).
So I noticed last night....off the Tagesschau (ARD) news (public TV).....they ran an update from the secret files.
For 2022....roughly 30,000 requests were made over a personal review of individuals. Interest, among residents, hasn't ever lessened.
Presently, the folks who handle the sensitive files.....figure around 94-percent are now sorted, and there's still a couple of years left to resolve what remains.
Since day one? They figure around 3.4-million requests have come in. To be honest....even if you filed for a review back in 2000.....it's possible something else was added in the past twenty years, as they continue to review the records.
What's typical for a guy or gal to find in such a review? I sat five years ago watching a documentary piece over the topic. Some guy had found in his review....a neighbor who regularly reported (almost monthly) on his habits or personal life. It was like a listing....his type of music that he listened to.....new clothing....his smoking habit...ordinary 'stuff'.
My humble feeling is that the vast majority of people are finding pretty marginal or limited information in the records, and wondering what all the 'hype' was about. Some might be shocked that their secret sexual affair with the neighbor or co-worker was never noticed, or that some non-existent sexual affair was reported and in the records from the 1960s to the 1980s.
