Oddly enough, as the CDU Party ended their Hamburg meeting Friday night....they went to one last bit of business. Since the new chief of the party had been voted upon and selected (AKK).....her job as General Secretary of the CDU Party would be vacated. Here, she sat a few things into sequence, and Paul Ziemiak ended up with around 60-percent of the party vote as the General Secretary.
His background? Well....he's been the chairman of the youth-arm of the CDU Party for roughly four years. He's young (33), and originated out of Poland (a German today).
Negatives? None really for this job. What you could sense out of this placement (his pick was important to AKK)....she is laying down a card for a dozen years in the future (assuming she runs in 2021 and stays there for two terms)....he would end up as the Chancellor candidate after that. This would be sold as Ziemiak was at one point....an immigrant....who integrated into German society.
Why only 60-odd percent on the vote? Well...there is disenchantment from the Merz-crowd, and there is a wedge being driven within the CDU Party. Ziemiak is a big supporter of AKK.
Generally, I might go and suggest that some folks will reflect upon their participation in the party and the direction that the party is going with AKK....then resolve this by resigning the CDU and retiring from politics. I could see several dozen folks (out of the top 1,500 members) taking this route in frustration of another long period of Merkel-like leadership.
