There's a debate going on recently in Germany....within the Bundestag (the Parliament)...over the idea of forcing organ donation (upon death). The Health Minister....Jens Spahn (CDU), wants to make it mandatory that you will be donating, unless you write a note to reject it ahead of time, or your relatives intervene in the situation.
Focus carried part of the discussion, and I read through the piece this morning.
Germans rarely sign up for organ donation....that's a simple fact. They advertise this and hype it a good bit. But it's not an accepted procedure.
Right now, throughout the country of 82-million, folks estimate that near 10,000 people need a transplant.
The idea of a mandatory situation? I think the majority of folks wouldn't argue about it. It's simply a topic that rarely comes up or gets discussed in a personal sort of way. My humble guess is that the Bundestag will craft the law....pass it within the next six months, and it'll be law by summer of next year.
