Moria Update: 12 September 2020

If you watched prime-time German news last night (ARD or ZDF), the number one item and consuming a vast amount of time....was the Greek refugee camp in Moria, Lesbos, Greece.

After you consumed all of the various pieces....there's basically three facts at this point:

1. While the Greek government is stepping forward to rebuild the 'camp'....it's obvious that island residents are mostly all anti-camp/anti-refugee.  They want the 'camp' removed from the island.  Tarps are being flown into the construction by helicopter because of roads being blocked.

2. All of the hyped-up pro-asylum and 'bring-them-here' chatter from the German political scene (literally tons of it)....is basically going nowhere.  Over the past two days, I've probably watched forty different German political figures highly enthusiastic over moving their 'fair-share' of refugees to Germany.  Various German cities are chatting a number like '500' each that they are ready and willing to accept.  National leadership view?  Because of the fear over negative reaction (AfD Party slamming the entry potentially), this needs to be a EU directive, with all EU members taking a fair-share. So far, that effort has gone nowhere.

3.  I've watched two interviews with various refugees and they generally stated their intent....to reach Germany.  They aren't talking about Portugal, or Italy, or Czech...it's absolutely Germany as the premier location to go into.  I suspect that even if you got a EU commitment to move the 13k refugees to twenty-odd countries....upon arrival in each country.....each group would pack up and haul off to Germany within a week.  I also suspect that the Germans know this, and are a bit worried over the implications.

Beyond this?  There's nothing much else for facts.  There is an investigation over how the fire started.  Some refugees suggest it was Lesbos locals (Greeks) who started the fire.  Some locals think it was the residents of the camp, who started the fire.  Lets be blunt, it's awful dry in this region, and you can't be sure of anything.

If the camp is rebuilt (say even on another island)?  It simply sends the message to the refugees that the EU will never have a solution, and they are eternally stuck in this limbo situation....maybe years and years.
