National Emergency Day?

Thursday (10 September) is shaping up to be the first time in thirty years (since West Germany days), that the nation practiced a true national emergency response.

Alarms in cities, towns and villages will go off tomorrow.  Various emergency services will have practice runs and tests....to ensure what they have written down and said that they can accomplish....is true.

Public response?  Practically zero.  If you asked Germans about the announcement....probably half of them have read about it or hear the announcement on the radio.  The rest know nothing.

Before 1990?  You generally had regional or city 'tests' to occur, and the siren business was set for a 60-second test.  This time around?  According to the plan....all TV networks and radio networks will participate....at the same time.

The necessity driving this?  Simply to say they can do it, without screwing it up.  Already problems?  They announced in a couple of regions in eastern Germany that their sirens aren't hooked up and won't be participating.  I would anticipate more problems being noted as the day progresses.
