Masks, C02 and Hypercapnia

Focus told this story in the AM today.

Fifteen years ago.....a German medical study was conducted on masks.  Basically, they came to the end of the study and said that you can collect up too much C02, by wearing the mask for extended period.  How much?  They didn't get into details and you have to remember....this was way back around 2005.  At the conclusion....they said it wasn't a big deal.

Course, you have to pause over this and ask....were they talking about a guy wearing the mask off and on for three hours of situations at the lab or clinic?  Or were they talking about a nurse standing in a six-hour operation and wearing the standard paper-mask?

Too much C02?  This is actually classified as a health worry....called Hypercapnia.  Lighter conditions?  Dizziness, drowsiness, excessive fatigue, headaches, and feeling a bit disoriented.

On the excessive side of Hypercapnia? Well...muscle twitching, panic attacks, and seizures.

The fact that masks have improved?  This might be positive but it is reflecting up the exhaled air going out of the mask.  The cotton type?  That would hold the C02 more so in, and ought to require you to take a break every hour to get 'fresh' air.

Something to worry about?  If they were to go to the next step and require the mask for a full eight-hour work-day?  We will start to drag up old studies like this and go back to review the results against today.  As bad as Covid-19 is.....we might be creating a 2nd wave down the path....with other health issues.
